TINTS of VIBGYOR: Microbial Pigments explores one of the most fundamental yet underexplored aspects of life on Earth—colour. From the earliest microbes to complex ecosystems, pigments have shaped survival, metabolism, and evolution by interacting with solar energy within the visible spectrum of light (380–700 nm), known as VIBGYOR. Colours are present everywhere—in bacteria, plants, animals, soil, water, landscapes, and even the atmosphere—yet the science behind them has received limited systematic attention. This book places microbial pigments at the center of biological inquiry, highlighting their critical role beyond mere coloration. These pigments actively participate in metabolic processes, energy absorption, protection from environmental stress, and physiological regulation through interaction with photons of solar light. Microorganisms, the oldest living forms on Earth, evolved nearly 3.5 billion years ago under extreme environmental conditions. To survive, they adapted to abiotic factors such as heat, water, atmosphere, and solar radiation—largely through the development of pigments. These pigments, ranging from violet to red, correspond directly to the visible spectrum of sunlight and represent an evolutionary strategy for harnessing and responding to solar energy. The book is structured systematically: Chapter 1 provides a comprehensive overview of microbial pigments and their biological significance. Chapter 2 delves into the chemistry of microbial pigments, focusing on their aromatic and heterocyclic structures. Subsequent chapters are organized according to pigment colours aligned with the VIBGYOR spectrum, offering colour-wise insights into pigment function, chemistry, and ecological relevance. This volume is the second book in the “TINTS of VIBGYOR” series, following the first title published on Kindle in 2022. Edited by Dr. Priti Mathur and Arjun Singh Kohli, this book aims to build a foundational understanding of how the seven colours of VIBGYOR influence microorganisms and, by extension, life and nature as a whole. TINTS of VIBGYOR: Microbial Pigments is a valuable resource for students, researchers, educators, and professionals in microbiology, biotechnology, environmental sciences, and life sciences. It opens new perspectives on chromatic biology and emphasizes the need for systematic colour-based studies to better understand complex biological processes and disease mechanisms. This book is among the first of its kind to present a holistic overview of chromatic pigments on Earth and their interaction with light—making it an essential addition to contemporary scientific literature.
